Cereal Eater?
I had always thought I would wait until Wyatt was at least 6 months before introducing any “solid” foods, however lately I felt compelled and curious to try. So today we did, one day after he is 5 calendar months old.
We decided to first try Happy Bellies Organic Brown Rice Cereal. You can buy it at Target, Amazon and at most natural foods stores.
So we mixed 2 ounces of expressed milk with 1 tablespoon of cereal. It was super-runny and you could almost not even tell it was cereal. That combined with a tiny spoon, and being half an hour late feeding Wyatt, made for an interesting “first” experience…
It wasn’t a bad experience, by any means. But half way through spooning little tiny spoon fulls of liquid into his mouth, I began to wonder “what’s the point?” when nursing him is so much more efficient…
I ended up pouring the rest of the liquid cereal into a bottle and fed him that way. Then nursed him as well. Seemed more like an experiment to get him used to eating with a spoon in his chair. But perhaps next time I will not wait until he is STARVING to try so we can take our time.
Next time will probably be a while from now, as Wyatt spent the rest of the afternoon tooting and spitting up. Two things he hardly ever does. Coincidence? I think not. The old version of myself would feel really bad and be kicking myself (herself? are we in third person speak now?) for “putting him through all that”. But to be honest, he really didn’t seem to mind. Except when there was a delay in filling his belly. And it was kind of fun to try something new and watch how he reacted.
Perhaps he is not a cereal kind of kid. Perhaps we should try another first later on with steamed, mashed veggies. Mmmm, now that sounds good!
However, I think I’m going to need a bigger spoon…
