After putting together some more furniture today, we decided to see what it would be like for Scott to sit in the new rocker with a baby in one hand and a bottle in another.

Here’s the result:

So my big solution to “food depression” (aka – getting so hungry that I cannot eat) is to shop ahead and make a bunch of meals.  Makes sense, right?  From the very beginning, the baby made it clear that protein was a must and sugar was not really appreciated.  It did so by giving me the shakes until I ate a piece of meat or cheese, and making my gums so sensitive that any sugary item that came in contact with them would send shooting pain into my head, similar to having a cavity drilled with no pain medication. So I listen, and adapt, and repeat.

This week I did a big shop at Whole Foods and made a big lasagna, bought ground beef for burgers as well as a $14 organic whole chicken to roast last night.  Yum, right?  Well, I pulled out the chicken last night and unwrapped it to rinse it off and prepare it for it’s 90 minutes in the sauna.  Turns out, baby does not like chicken.  (Sidenote:  I am eating a grilled cheese sandwich as I type this, and am concerned it might come up on me as I am having flash backs of the chicken episode just by writing about it…)

After gagging over the sink, I wondered if it was off.  So I dressed it anyway, put it in the fridge and had Scott smell it when he came home.  He said it smelled fine, so I put it in the oven.  At about the half-way point, I thought I would check on it to see if the cooking of chicken smelled better than raw.  A logical decision.  Turns out, it was not.  Gagging continued.  I began to wonder if this is how vegetarians feel when they smell raw or cooking meat.  If so, I apologize to any who have been here when we have been barbecuing.

The end result was not much better.  I cooled and wrapped the chicken and put it in the fridge.  Scott said he will pick it apart tomorrow so at least it won’t go to waste.  But seriously, I can still smell that sick, raw flesh in my nose when I think about it.  Of course, I asked for this, because I was initially disgusted at the amount of meat I was eating and repeatedly said that I can’t wait to eat vegetarian again, even if it is just for a week or so.  Ta da!

The good news is that I like vegetables again.  So that seems fair.  Time to start planning all over again.

So instead of a chicken dinner, I had a bowl of cereal for dinner.  It was actually pretty good.  And I was able to get to sleep quite easily.

Until 4am.  When a lone cicada, directly outside my window, decided to start chirping loudly.  You would think I would be able to block it out but I also woke up with a headache (waa waa, I know) and so this sound was splitting my head in two.  I must have complained externally, as Scott woke up and offered to go out and kill “Jiminy” for me.  But I said no.  All those Disney movies made me feel guilty.  So I took his second suggestion, and moved to the spare bedroom.  Man, that bed is comfy!  And that is where the strange dreams began…

One dream had something to do with my iPhone and losing all the info on it, but I think that may be due to the fact I was debating downloading the latest update…  But still haven’t.  In the next dream, I looked in the mirror to discover I was missing three teeth!  But then remembered I was dreaming and looked again to find one had returned.  So it was just a matter of time…

The only other dream I remember was to do with finding a turtle upside-down in our garage.  I took him outside and was feeding him lettuce and other greens.  And it was raining.  Strange since it has been a while since we have had any rain.  Plus it’s in the 100s F here right now.

So there you have it.  I’m off to wash some veggies…

PostHeaderIcon The Babymoon is Over

A few months ago, Scott and I decided to go to Dallas for three days at the end of July. Since then I learned that it is encouraged to have a “Babymoon” while pregnant, to just spend a bit of time together and relax. So it seems we are naturally on the right track!

We had a nice time driving to Dallas, and stopped in Allen, TX on the way in to shop at the outlet mall. Lots of great children’s stores but since we do not know the little dude’s gender yet it was more like window shopping. I did notice that at these very busy children’s stores that the girls’ side was packed and loud and full of drama while the boys’ side was quiet and serene. Hmmmm…

Scott found a neat little outfit, probably more appropriate if we have a boy.  Here is his Tweet about it:

Would have been better if it came with a little hat and holster… http://yfrog.com/m9jmxkj

After a nice dinner with a former work colleague, and a mini adventure of finding beer for Scott (our hotel was in a “dry” county) we settled into the hotel. When we pulled up to the hotel to check in, there were two coaches full of people arriving! Turns out there was a family reunion of 150 from Mississippi there. Plus two weddings! Made for great people watching.

Scott’s tweet before dinner:

Sunday we had a nice breakfast and then, as the pool was in the shade until the afternoon, decided to hit Ikea. We spent three hours there. Madness! But fun. Got lots of good ideas for decorating, plus found some neat house and baby stuff too.

After Ikea we took a well deserved break at the pool. The kids in the pool even let Scott play “Marco Polo” with them! My dreams of swimming and being in a pool were fulfilled. I seriously have been dreaming of being in water for months. And now I know why. Apparently your body weight decreases by something like 25% when you are in water. SO NICE for the increasingly heavy belly. It literally lightened my load. Plus I keep reading that next to walking, swimming is the best exercise you can get while pregnant. But I was not so keen on all the chlorine (more on that later).

Sunday night we watched tv and movies and ordered room service. So nice to do nothing and have no obligations!  Oh and Scott built beer-henge:

Monday we headed back to Oklahoma and stopped at a few shops on the way.

It was a great trip!  And I know I came home feeling much more relaxed and able to get all the stuff done I need to do.

I’m curious to know if any of you mothers and/or fathers went on a mini-break either at home or away prior to the arrival of your baby…  Post your comments here.  I was thinking that if/when we have a second child, it might be nice to take the three of us on a Babymoon.  But that’s getting way ahead of myself…  :-)

PostHeaderIcon “Is that gas, or did I feel the baby just move…?”

At just over 15 weeks, there seems to be more and more to talk about!  Stuff is really starting to happen…  Apparently, at this point the gender of the baby can be determined.  Our next appointment is Tuesday next week and although we are scheduled to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time, I hope we get to see if it has “stuff” or not.  People tell me they are more accurate at detecting boys than girls, as the boys show their stuff and what they think is a girl may just be a shy boy.  But oh well.  As long as we don’t paint the little Dude’s room pink, we will be fine.

Also at 15 weeks, mom (that’s me!) should be able to feel the baby moving inside.  Although you won’t see or feel it from the outside for a while…  Apparently this happens when I am sitting or laying still.  So, at night.  (Or nap time!)  I thought it might be just in my head, but the day before I read this, I was sure my stomach felt… well… different  Like still was poking around, and it wasn’t the cheeseburger from earlier.  I’m pretty in tune (aka paranoid) with my body and feelings it has.  So I did wonder.  The next night I had images of arms and legs pushing around.  Little Dude somersaults and backflips.  Hey Dude, enjoy it while you have the room.  All too soon, and you will be pushing new frontiers.  But we don’t need to talk about THAT just yet…

What else… oh, the Dude should measure about 4 inches long, and can now move all of his or her limbs.  And he or she can hear!  Scott’s already planning the play-list which will include the Binary Sunset (of course) as I mentioned classical music makes the kid smarter.  In fact I am playing it now.  I think the Dude likes it as it is making me smile.  Also, I have started to play… country music.  (sigh)  The Dude gets what the Dude wants.

Although the Dude’s eyes are fused shut, one email source says if you put a flashlight on my belly, the Dude will naturally move away from the light.  I told Scott about this, and although I am not sure the two situations are related, but he has started to tap my belly.  Like you would an aquarium.  Hmmm.  I am pretty sure you are not suppose to scare the fish, or the Dude.

Anyone wanting to ‘read’ ahead and get an idea of what is in store between weeks 15 and 20, can click here to see for themselves! Amazing.

PS:  Don’t forget to get your vote in to say whether you think we will have a boy or a girl.  See the right side panel for the poll.  This may be the last few weeks before we find out…  I wonder if we should tell or not…

PostHeaderIcon Yes. I would like fries with that.

Scott came home yesterday with a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets.  By request.  Ok, I did not request 20 but I did request the nuggets.  I will not say how many I ate, but I will say that it was the first meal I actually enjoyed in a long time.  Weird, as I have not eaten at McDonald’s in years.  But baby gets what baby wants.  And it seems like baby wants fast food right now.  But I wonder if this is really true, or if I just like it because it is fast, and when I hit those -panichavetoeatNOW- moments, there is always a drive thru (sic) available.

For all my natural food opinions, it feels strange to be pounding back these golden fried little wonders.  But seriously, at this point, I am just grateful I am not throwing up everything I attempt to eat.  On that note, I think I have discovered the source of my night-time morning sickness.  This morning I took my fish oil pills with breakfast, instead of dinner like I normally do, and half an hour later I was ready to start heaving.  Success!  My accidental experiment worked and I now know -don’t take the fish oil pills!  I will look for an alternative brand, but really I am on so many supplements right now, and getting tested every two weeks by my doctor to see what I am deficient in, that I am not concerned.  We shall see if the dreaded 8pm arrives tonight without its usual drama…

Speaking of doctors, I promised details of our eight-week examination.  And here they are!

Scott and I went to the doctor’s office at eight weeks (and two days) for my initial exam and first meeting with the actual doctor.  (Previous visit was mostly paperwork and Q&A with the nurse).  She was running quite late, which left lots of time for creative tweeting in the waiting room:

Off to see the Gyno-saurus for an ultrasound….not on me silly!

9:58 AM May 18th via Twitter for iPhone by @TulsaScott

Sigh.  I can’t even pretend to be annoyed because it really is quite funny to see him sitting next to the ‘all cell phones must be switched off’ sign, giggling to himself at how clever he is.

We went in and met the doctor, who is awesome by the way.  Did all the exam stuff.  Actually thought I made sure that Scott didn’t steal anything this time, and then it was time for the first ultrasound.  Ah ha!  I want proof!  Photographic evidence that, as Scott says, it’s not just a quantum-singularity in my belly absorbing all the food and raining bits of cracker and carrot into some unsuspecting land in another dimension.

Nope.  It’s a baby.

See!

Ok well maybe you can’t really see, but it’s that little blurb in the middle of the black.  Apparently the head is on the left and we watched a little light pulse in the middle.  That is the heartbeat!  Pretty cool stuff.

Our next appointment is for 12 weeks, which is next week!

Oh, and I guess Scott got away with something again…

Last Dr visit was a giant Q-tip. This visit is this? Not quite sure what it is but I ain’t gonna use it. http://yfrog.com/j0idjrj
